Bezier Pen tool for custom text paths

is there a way to add a bezier pen tool or some type of line with handles and nodes that can be manipulated in a similar way to customize the path for text. the current curved text option only lets you put text on a circle, but there are many times it would be nice for text to be able to curve around an object or follow the same of an object, something like a heart or a wave or other objects that are not square or round.. in Illustrator, this is done with the Bezier pen tool
